Espers: Espers III

Espers' latest blend of folk and prog has some beautiful moments, writes Ally Carnwath

The strain of wyrd folk adopted by Philadelphian collective Espers on their first two albums was wyrder than most, blending eerie folk melodies with strung-out time signatures and proggy song structures. The same elements are present here but less adeptly balanced; Meg Baird's aethereal vocals – one of the band's chief assets – give way too often to distorted guitar and instrumental freakouts to sustain any sort of mood. But there are some beautiful moments nonetheless; "The Pearl" evokes the beguiling sadness of Minnesotan threepiece Low, and there's a lovely drowsy swing to "Another Moon Song".
