Humphrey Lyttelton: Live with Marie Knight 1958

An hour-long set by Humphrey Lyttleton left other jazz stars raving, writes Dave Gelly

A true gem from the archives. Now released for the first time, this was recorded live in Nottingham, during a tour with the American blues and gospel singer Marie Knight, by the best band Humph ever had. Indeed, more than one visiting jazz star went home raving that it was the best of its kind in the world. And Humphrey Lyttelton himself, then in his late 30s, was at his very peak as a trumpet player. The whole hour-long set is an object lesson in that combination of sharp ensemble and loose, easy swing that only the best can achieve.
