Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings: I Learned the Hard Way

Killian Fox enjoys a masterclass in retro-modern soul

Like a copy that's more perfect than the original, there's something uncanny about the way Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings – who released their first album in 2002 – manage to sound like a 70s funk band. But, even as they shed the dusty texture of their early material, there's no denying they've got soul. If the swooning strings and strutting horns on their fourth album sound familiar, it's because Dap-King personnel were integral to a certain Amy Winehouse release. This may lack the idiosyncrasies of Back to Black but, thanks to Jones's radiant voice, it's the better record.
