Italian film-director Luca Guadagnino apparently spent 10 years pursuing the American composer John Adams to secure his involvement in I Am Love (Io sono l'amore) starring Tilda Swinton. Whether or not you see the film, which Guadagnino shaped with Adams in mind, this soundtrack is a rewarding digest of the Pulitzer winner's musical styles: the foxtrot from "Chairman Dances", two Shaker Loops, the Desert Chorus from Death of Klinghoffer and Parts II and III of Harmonielehre. Given the large scale of so many of Adams's works, this sampler of Nonesuch recordings, blessed by his own hands, makes for practical, as well as musical, enjoyment.
