Thank goodness Schumann discovered the manuscript of Schubert's "Great" C major symphony in the composer's estate in 1838; otherwise, it would have sunk without trace and we would not have Schumann's own symphonies – he had thought the form dead before he became inspired by Schubert. Sakari Oramo and his Stockholm players catch something of Schumann's inspiration in their heady interpretation of the "Spring" Symphony No 1, lending a dash and energy to the fast movements which they carry over into the finale of Symphony No 2. These are live recordings, given a glorious lustre by the generous acoustic of the Stockholm Konserthuset.
