Sheryl Crow: 100 Miles From Memphis

Sheryl Crow goes back to her soul roots and breaks free of pop-rock mediocrity, says Hugh Montgomery

Long associated with anodyne pop-rock, Sheryl Crow has gone soul for her new album, whose title emphasises her roots growing up near the US soul capital. As for authenticity, the songs speak for themselves: from swinging Stax grooves ("Our Love Is Fading") to Al Greenesque balladry ("Sideways"), there's an effortless classicism at play, even as Crow's gently ragged vocals stop things devolving into pastiche. Clunky sermonising spoils "Say What You Want" and a cover of "I Want You Back" is expendable, but neither can dim the sense of Crow extricating herself from a rut of mediocrity.
