The Georgian-born violinist Lisa Batiashvili, a fast-rising international star, grew up steeped in the music of Shostakovich. Her Soviet childhood was dominated by the sound of her father's quartet practising his music, and her teacher was a pupil of David Oistrakh, the dedicatee of Shostakovich's violin concertos. His No 1, Op 77 is the chief work, played with majesty and poetry on this soulful, mixed repertoire recital disc. Fellow Georgian Giya Kancheli (b 1935) is represented by V&V for violin, taped voice and strings. Pianist Hélène Grimaud joins her in Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel and Rachmaninov's Vocalise Op 34 No 14. This DG debut disc confirms Batiashvili as a powerful musical voice with an exciting future.
