The Silver Violin – review

Nicola Benedetti is perfectly at home in this disc of themes from Hollywood, writes Fiona Maddocks

The popular 25-year-old violinist Nicola Benedetti has released this "concept" CD ahead of her appearance at the Last Night of the Proms next weekend and straight after her turn at Scotland's T in the Park. Happy to embrace any repertoire and never mind the musical snobs, she hopes to attract young audiences in the process. The lush, romantic sound of Hollywood – 1930s to the present – suits her well: Korngold's Violin Concerto is the main work, alongside Williams (the theme from Schindler's List), Hess (Ladies in Lavender), Marianelli and Gardel as well as Shostakovich (The Gadfly) and Mahler (Shutter Island). It helps that in the photo shoot for the disc she looks like a starlet too.
