Buika: La Noche Más Larga – review

Mallorcan singer Buika moves into jazzier territory on her sophisticated sixth album, writes Neil Spencer

The petite Mallorcan's star remains in the ascendant. Now relocated to Miami, she's clearly reaching for a pan-American audience on this sixth album. It's an eclectic affair, taking her acrobatic flamenco vocals into a more jazz flavoured zone and mixing her songs with covers of Jacques Brel and Abbey Lincoln. A classy cast includes Pat Metheny on the slow No Lo Se, which proves the most aching excursion; mostly, Buika bustles, turning even Billie Holiday's bittersweet Don't Explain into a brisk flamenco fusion. It's as sophisticated as its sleek cover shot, if short of the yearing ballads that made her famous.
