Ted & Gladys: The Rhythm of Life – review

Geoff Gascoyne and Trudy Kerr turn in a creditable set of covers and original jazz songs as alter egos Ted and Gladys, writes Dave Gelly

In real life, Ted and Gladys are bassist-composer Geoff Gascoyne and singer Trudy Kerr. Despite the pseudonyms and a nice, cheesy CD cover, this is a perfectly straightforward jazz-vocal set, adroitly performed with a light touch by some of Britain's leading contemporary musicians. The tunes are roughly half-and-half Gascoyne/ Kerr originals and rarely heard standards. Unexpected touches include a duet for voices and bass by Ted and Gladys, and Hey John, the winsome little song that Blossom Dearie wrote for John Lennon. And it's good to hear again from that fine but strangely elusive saxophonist/ flautist Andy Panayi.
