Bland's recent death brought the singer tributes centred on 1970s successes such as Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City. This 29-track compilation returns to the pioneering hits of the late 1950s, when he was feted by black America but largely ignored by white audiences searching for rawer, more electric blues. Bland's sophisticated, jazz-tinged delivery, often with a big band, didn't fit (though Turn On Your Love Light was much covered). The likes of Cry, Cry, Cry, I Woke Up Screaming and I Smell Trouble still crackle with intensity, with Bland's warm, grainy vocals slipping into choked torment. Dazzling, original stuff.
