1997's Paradiso was a masterpiece of minimalism by two masters of Brazilian music, composer Ronaldo Bastos and singer Celso Fonseca. Last year, Bastos decided to recast the album, its wistful love songs given elaborate orchestral arrangements and Fonseca's voice supplemented by other singers. The result is a joyous surprise. The title track becomes a jazzy mood piece with Miles-like trumpet. Bastos pours syrupy strings over Flor da Noite, turns Você Não Sacou into a Beatlesque romp and Denise Bandeira into a funk samba. Of the new singers, Adriana Calcanhotto shines, but Fonseca's warm, supple tones steal the show, turning Keats's A Thing of Beauty into a tropical croon.
