Christian Wallumrød Ensemble: Outstairs – review

Christian Wallumrød and friends tread the line between jazz and classical to highly pleasing effect, writes Dave Gelly

When it comes to jazz and contemporary classical music, it's getting hard to tell who's adopting whom. Judging by the six instruments on this album, it's about even – trumpet and saxophone on one side, violin and cello on the other, with percussion and piano (Christian Wallumrød himself) in both camps. Some of the music is improvised and some obviously written, but the general atmosphere is unmistakably what we have come to recognise as north European – calm, mysterious and slightly folky. The constantly overlapping textures, and melodies that teasingly vanish just as you grasp them, keep the ears pleasantly alert.
