Self-taught and long ignored, the British composer John Foulds (1880-1939) has enjoyed a recent revival of interest thanks to a few lone champions, chief among whom is Sakari Oramo during his period as chief conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. This double CD reissue is worth investigating, with a top line-up of soloists such as Daniel Hope (violin), Susan Bickley (mezzo) and Peter Donohoe (piano). The nine works, including Three Mantras from Avatara, the bizarre Lyra Celtica – Concerto for Voice and Orchestra and April – England, display the full range of Foulds's talents, from the exotic and the ecstatic to the wild and poetic. Sometimes like late Strauss, at others more early Messiaen, in the end he is purely himself.
