Am Gone (Spare Thought)

Not many bands sound like Dirty Projectors for the same reason that not many houses look like Gaudi's Casa Batlló: Dave Longstreth's fiendish guitar figures and meandering melodies are almost impossible to emulate. So credit to Leeds' Adult Jazz for having a crack. At first, it sounds as if they're making it up as they go along, but then Am Gone locks into a strident, summery groove, before twisting itself inside out and ending up in a different postcode entirely. It leaves you feeling like Dynamo's just nicked your watch and handed it back to you inside a kebab: bemused, even faintly violated, but very much impressed.

Dibby Dibby Sound (Ministry Of Sound)

What is a dibby dibby sound? Apparently, it's the noise emitted when you think you're making a globe-spanning, genre-defying mash-up of dancehall, UK garage, moombahton and samba but the end result is actually no more exotic than an advert for a new energy drink called something like Juggernaut Seizure Max. Not that this tune isn't a big, dumb hunk of fun, but for all the time that DJ Fresh spent "conducting exhaustive, encyclopaedic research into traditional Brazilian drumbeats" he might have well have been creosoting his shed.

All That She Wants (Dim Mak)

Not sure what I expected of a cover of Ace Of Base's Scandi-reggae benchmark by the guys behind novelty summer hit We Speak No Americano and the two furiously camp frontmen from Azari & III to sound like. But not like this: a narcoticised slo-mo disco throb that teases out all the suppressed desire of the original. Didn't realise it was there in the first place? Just observe what happens when it gets dropped at midnight in Reflex.
The Family Rain
Trust Me I'm A Genius (Mercury)

The Family Rain are three beardy brothers from Bath who deal in crunchy late-60s rock rifferama with a Britpop sheen. So, yes, they do sound a bit like Kula Shaker. But Trust Me I'm A Genius is their trump card, a helter-skeltering psych-pop prowler that's more akin to Supergrass at their hairiest. Plus you can see my old house in the video, which is a nice touch.
Lolawolf
What Love Is (Innit Recordings)

It's not often I have sympathy with celebrity sprogs, but spare a thought for Lolawolf frontwoman Zoë Kravitz, destined to be caught forever in the imperious shadow of her dad Lenny – the rock star Hendrix could have been. What Love Is drifts by pleasantly, even if its breathy nonchalance feels a teensy bit contrived. A tip, though: if you don't want reviewers to keep mentioning your famous dad, maybe avoid using the same chords as It Ain't Over Til It's Over in future.
