Songs to the North Sky review – Tim Garland’s joyous jazz-classical fusion

The saxophonist joins forces with the Royal Northern Sinfonia on a beautiful double album, writes Dave Gelly

No one walks the borderland between jazz and classical music more sure-footedly than Tim Garland. It defines him, as both composer and instrumentalist, and has developed beyond mere style into a complete, distinct musical idiom. The first disc of this double CD is devoted to the latest edition of his innovative small band, Lighthouse, and the second to the luminously beautiful title work, which he performs with the strings of the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Atmospheric, evocative and unfailingly melodic, it's an absorbing experience, with Garland's saxophone playing a joy.
