Laurie Levine: Six Winters – review

Touches of country and electronica add variety to the Cape Town singer's bittersweet third album, writes Neil Spencer

This young Cape Town singer manages to sound more West Virginian than South African on this third album, which blends country tropes with touches of electronica in support of her heartfelt, bittersweet songs. It's a varied creation that runs from the doom-laden trip-hop of opener Oh Brother to the jaunty dobro and fiddle of Stray. There's a slow-motion cover of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire, but Levine has her own voice, one that's apparently taken the six winters of the title to find, and if her vocals are occasionally mannered, the heartache of a burnt-out love affair burns bright.
