Few musicians have had a more accelerated career trajectory than 22-year-old Stone, the former great white soul hope now seen as washed up, courtesy of maligned makeovers and post-Winehouse competition. This is a decent comeback, however, which eschews her last LP's hip-hop leanings for more straightforward retro soul funk. Amid nods to Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Dionne Warwick, what most impresses is her voice, which has acquired emotional resonance to match its size. There are longueurs – ghastly AOR ballad "Stalemate" – but enough to suggest this wannabe diva could yet be the real deal.
