Silver Seas: Alaska – review

Silver Seas' 70s-influenced AOR might not be terribly cutting-edge, but their fourth album is enjoyable enough, writes Hermione Hoby

Silver Seas are four adept and sweetly unshowy musicians from Nashville who've been around since 2002 but who remain underrated, perhaps because the kind of music they make - the softest-hearted soft rock - is fashionable neither in Nashville nor elsewhere. Theirs is music full of the lilt and swell and mellow melodies of 70s AOR, although they've designated this, their fourth album, as their country record. Their hometown makes itself known – lots of songs are accented with steel guitar – but the instrumentation stays delicate throughout. I don't think anyone's ever going to charge Silver Seas with edginess, but the band make a compelling case for the pleasures of plain and heartfelt warmth over cool.
