Two of Scotland's most celebrated jazz musicians combine for a subdued but often surprisingly intense set of classic songs. Smith's warm-toned tenor saxophone and Kellock's delicate but probing piano cast new harmonic and rhythmic light on familiar tunes such as Stardust and Moonlight Serenade. No matter how adventurous their ideas, they never quite lose sight of the familiar melodies. Their Ballad Medley, in which 11 songs are cunningly stitched into a seamless, eight-minute design, is a tour de force. This is their third album in a notoriously demanding format and their musical empathy continues to grow.
