Bill Frisell: Disfarmer

Frisell creates the musical equivalent of a family photo album in 26 short tracks, says Dave Gelly

The unpredictable Frisell this time settles on the work of Mike Disfarmer (born Michael Meyer), a small-town photographer in Heber Springs, Arkansas between 1917 and 1956, whose portraits, recently rediscovered, have been hailed as masterpieces. Frisell creates the musical equivalent of a family photo album in 26 short tracks, using blues and country ballads along with his own melodies. Played by a string band of violin, steel guitar, mandolin, bass and his own guitar, they create a charming, sepia-tinted effect.
