Les Savy Fav: Root for Ruin

New York art punks Les Savy Fav still sound endearingly awkward, says Hugh Montgomery

"We still got our appetite!" barks frontman Tim Harrington on Root for Ruin's opener, confirmation that age hasn't withered these New York art-punk veterans. Rather, building on 2007's belated breakthrough album Let's Stay Friends, their fifth LP bristles with self-assurance, perfectly balancing the primal and the poppy as it veers from soaring, Pixies-like crowd-pleasers ("Let's Get Out of Here") to no-wave discord ("Poltergeist"). Harrington's gauche disaffection can't quite mask the sophistication of his bandmates' guitar work.
