Look Park: Look Park review – heartfelt Fountains of Wayne side-project

First things first: Chris Collingwood insists this isn’t a solo record, it’s a side project from his other job as one of the two principals of Fountains of Wayne, alongside Adam Schlesinger. Second, he also insists he threw out every song that sounded like it might be by Fountains of Wayne. In both cases, he’s being a little disingenuous: he writes and sings every song, aided by a rhythm section, and whatever his intentions, it will be perceived as a solo record. And, sonically, it’s not a million miles from the last FoW record, Sky Full of Holes, which was similarly light on power chords. The lead single, Aeroplane, could be from that album: “Making a lane from the gate to the plane / Do you think I could just crash here?” is the kind of opening line we’ve heard so often from Collingwood. What’s different is that he’s eschewed the snarky character studies of his other band, in favour of seemingly more heartfelt songs, in which cynicism is displaced by wistfulness – Minor Is the Lonely Key, as one especially lovely song puts it. Look Park is understated to the point of diffidence, but recommended for those who favour the song over the sonics.
